How Can Rectal Cancer Be Treated?

I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH RECTAL CANCER 1 MONTH AGO. I AM 59 YEARS OLD.WEIGHT 145. NOT ON ANY MEDS. I FEEL GREAT. PET SHOWS LESIONS IN LIVER AND LUNG AND LESION ON S-4. STARTED WITH TAILBONE PAIN 2 WEEKS AGO. WAS TOLD BY ONCOLOGIST PALLIATIVE CARE WITH CHEMO REST OF LIFE. 5 % CHANGE 2 YEAR SURVIVAL WITH CHEMO. ALL LABS NORMAL INCLUDING CEA,ALKALINE PHOSP AND CBC,CMP. I AM WAITING TO WAKE UP AND EVERTHING STARTS BCAUSE I FEEL SO GOOD

Thanks for contacting with your health concern.

1. As you are a diagnosed case with prognosis explained, remain under the constant and regular supervision of your Oncologist.

2. As PET shows lesion in liver/lungs/S4 thus it is possible that metastasis [spread of cancer, stage 4] is there, thus curative care is not possible only palliative care is possible [which is essentially advised by the Oncologist]

PS. since the cancer is advanced you might need colostomy [to get rid of body waste] for the rest of your life.

3. elevated CEA levels are more common in smokers and Inflammatory conditions and can also be elevated in other carcinomas including lung, breast, gastrointestinal and gynecological cancers

PS. the sensitivity of CEA is low for early colorectal patients [1 month in your history] and increases with increasing stage of the disease, so make sure to have regular follow up visits, for periodic physical examination and blood tests.
