How Can Psoriasis Be Treated?

Hello, I am a male of 74 years old and have had 2 heart attacks and 5 bypass ops. I am concerned because the skin on my arms, legs and face are infected with Psoriasis and have now started making little bumps all over my body including my face and scalp. These are like small pimples with white heads. They get very itchy and if I scratch them, the heads come off with a patch of skin. It takes more than a week to cure the red spot it leaves underneath. I have been to a dermatologist who left me very dissatisfied and gave me just a small tube of of what felt like motor grease, and made my clothes filthy. Anything you can suggest?

General & Family Physician 's  Response

Hello, thank you for using Healthcaremagic. I read your query and I understand your concern.
Psoriasis is treated with
1. Tooical treatments like corticosteroids ointment in cases of nild psoriasis, vit D creams, retinoids creams, salicilic acid , coal tar .
2. Light therapy, UVA-UVB foto therapy, sunlight exposure, laser therapy.
3. Oral or injection therapy. Retinoids, methotraxat, cyclosporine
, biological agents.
Doctors choose treatments based on the type and severity of psoriasis and the areas of skin affected, the traditional approach is to start with the mildest treatments — topical creams and ultraviolet light therapy (phototherapy) — in those patients with typical skin lesions (plaques) and then progress to stronger ones only if necessary. Patients with pustular or erythrodermic psoriasis or associated arthritis usually need systemic therapy from the beginning of treatment. The goal is to find the most effective way to slow cell turnover with the fewest possible side effects.
Hope my answer was helpful, if you have any other questions I'll be glad to help you. Best regards Dr xxxxxx.
