How Can Painful Esophageal Spasms Be Treated?

I have had esophageal spasms since 2007. I was withdrawing from opiates oxy, diulaudid, Welbutrin and was requested by this new pain mgmt Doctor to stop the valium. I explained I was on 10 mg valium QD and now 2mg to keep me from going into the hospital with IV val. I am not eating. lost 10 pounds in16 days. the spasms are horrible. I dont want to go into the hospital. I hope I make sense. I have had GI Docs doing dilitations 1 -2x yr or botox for all these years and now I am sick all the time.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Esophageal spasms can be treated with a class of medication called calcium channel blockers (Diltiazem). Viagra has also been used to reduce the spasm. You should also eat small portions of food. Eat small frequent meals. Keep a food diary to identify the foods that trigger spasms and avoid those. Please be advised to follow up with your treating physician to add Diltiazem to the treatment regime.
