How Can Pain In The Neck And Back Be Treated?

Neck pain from left center of back of neck down to left bakplatenear top of shoulder. Feels like a knife grinding into my neck at times. Only occurs while standing or sitting upright. Am taking ibuprofen 800 MG, with tozanidine HCL 4MG. The area skin feels numb and right at the base of the neck if I rub it and press in with my finger tips it feels like a pin pricking my neck. An NA at the clinic prescribed the medicine Thursday and I am supposed to visit an orthopedic doctor Oct 25th but when I reach the point the medicine wears off the pain is 10+ and I feel like the knife is twisting. The only related stress to my neck was in January I had been involved in a high speed rear end collision which at time I had MRI and they found no neck or tendon injury. I had hit the stearing wheel from whiplash and broke my nose as well as 4 stiches on the tip of my nose from lacerations. I have had occasional neck pains especially after a long day or as major weather fronts move in.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You have a history of a whiplash injury of the neck and altough the instant MRI may show everything to be normal a review MRI of the neck and upper thorax spine can show the delayed effects of injury such as slipped disc, fibrosis and nerve compression.
You have a typical Neurogenic pain as you are feeling like knife cutting through and increases on standing or so.
Sling to support the affected arm and elbow helps a lot and you may need collar too.
If you are taking Ibuprofen, also take a PPI like Omeprazole to avoid gastric irritation.
Avoid all the positions and movements that increase your pain and consult your Neurosurgeon asap.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
