Hi,
With time the pain and swelling will decrease, the xarelto will anticoagulate your blood and help improve the flow. Usually after a DVT,
varicose veins develop and this unfortunately does cause swelling but it can be alleviated by limb elevation.
With a DVT, the site of occurrence is important as this determines the duration of treatment you require. A DVT in your calf is lower risk. Treatment is needed to dissolve the clot and in certain instances, to prevent further clots so that a
pulmonary embolism does not occur ( a blood clot in the vessels in your lung that can be fatal).
Symptoms of a pulmonary embolus includes sudden
severe chest pain or sudden
difficulty breathing. This is an emergency and requires immediate treatment at a hospital. Xarelto will lower your risk significantly.
A visit to the
hematologist is required to investigate the cause of the DVT as well as to recommend the duration of treatment.Risk factors for DVT include ( in females) hormonal contraceptives, pregnancy. People are more at risk if they suffered an injury or are immobile. Certain auto immune diseases such as anti
phospholipid syndrome has to be ruled out as this requires lifelong therapy with xarelto. This is ruled out by a
blood test.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Felicia Manickam
