How Can Pain And Stiffness In The Shoulder Be Treated?

Hello, my name is Megan. I am currently training for my first year as a varsity athlete at a Division 1 school. I was doing a shoulder workout with my trainer on Sunday and he warned me I would be sore. I was very sore that night and waking up the next morning it was very stiff and the pain had increased. Today, the pain has only gotten worse and hurts doing everything from sitting to more strenuous activity. Could you shed some light on whether this is just soreness or if I should be more concerned. It is only on my left shoulder. Thank you!

Hello Morgan,
After a work out since the muscles are being overworked soreness is quite common and normal. It usually resolves as the body gets used to the routine. That being said, in your case since the pain is present only on your left shoulder, there is a possibility that you injured/pulled one of the structures(ligaments or muscles) which hold your shoulder joint. Put some heat on your shoulder with a cloth which was immersed in hot water. Rest your shoulder. A pain killer tablet or pain relief sprays can help relieve the pain. It should be fine in a couple of days. But if the pain persists even after 4-5 days or you feel like you can't lift your shoulder, you'll need to visit an orthopeditian who will perform a few tests on you to see if there is anything more.
Do stretching exercises before you work out which will help to strengthen your shoulder joint.
I hope I answered your query.
Thank you.
