How Can Osteoporosis Be Treated?

My doc wants me to have an infusion of Reclast - I have osteoprosis, low serum D (23) (probably due to Crohn s), MS, Mast Cell Activation Disese (MCAD) & Mulitple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS), bilateral aortic blockages, and I m hypothyroid. Thyroid issues and mal-absorption issues were listed aming the warnings for Reclast, both (I think) in relation to concerns about jaw necrosis. I m concerned that Reclast may cause more problems than I m already dealing with. Although I seen warnings of side effects, I can t find how likely they are or whether I m at higher risk. While I no longer have frequent episodes of anaphylaxis, since I m taking Cromolyn Oral Solution for the MCAD, I do still experience allergic reactions.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

First, maintain your thyroid levels normal with levothyroxine, then treat vit D deficiency with sun exposure, oral cholecalciferol solution weekly twice for 8 weeks.

Then take supplements of calcium tablet with bisphosphonates tablet for bone mineralisation, then take supplementary food rich in calcium like milk, fish, eggs etc.

You continue treatment for three weeks, take Diclofenac tablet to relieve pain. After three weeks if there is no improvement go for an infusion of Reclast with prophylactic treatment for anaphylaxis with Avil, hydrocortisone.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr S Kausar Fathima Md, General & Family Physician
