How Can Non-Hodgkin S Lymphoma Be Treated?

My sister was diagnosed with Non-Hogkins Lymphoma 1 year ago. Her oncologist gives her IV therapy treatments to maintain her levels, i.e. potassium, hemoglobin, and I cannot recall the others. I do not totally understand these infusions, as my sister terms it. Can you help me understand this form of therapy?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,I understand your concern over the treatment of Non hodgkin's lymphoma.non hogkin's is a form of cancer and its treatment depends on different factors like if its fast growing or slow growing, and it involves how many areas. As you mentioned your sister is on IV therapy which can include combination of these medicines:

1)Rituximab(monoclonal antibodies if its B cell origin)and 2)Hydroxydaunorubicin
3)Cyclophosphamide
4)Prednisone or Prednisolone
5)Oncovin
These can be suggested in an interval of 2-3 weeks upto three cycles, after which staging is done doing a CT scan and then patient's response to the treatment is assessed. If there is any history of other illness then some of the medicines are not given to avoid complications.Over all the chemotherapy combination treatment is well tolerated by the patients. And for side effects like, chemotherapy induced vomiting medicines antiemetics, like ondansetron are given. To prevent other side effects necessary treatment is given. And alopecia(loss of hair) is common side effect of the treatment seen.

I hope it cleared your doubts, feel free to contact for further queries.
