How Can Myotonic Dystrophy Be Treated?

Our 17 yr old granddaughter has been diagnosed and confirmed by genetic yesting that she has Myotonic Dystophy. Our 48 yr old daughter and I have been advised to get genetic tests as well to give more diagnosis for our granddaughter. What can you tell me about this condition/disease and who locally in Jacksonville, FL are specialists in this? Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Both sexes can have Myotonic dystrophy.

Features include slow relaxation of muscles after contraction; long, thin face and neck; eyelids and lower part of face sag; muscles with weakness, pain, and decreased tone, Foot drop, cataracts, diabetes, poor swallowing and poor feeding in infancy.

Not all patients with myotonic dystrophy have the same features. It will be best if a neurology specialist in myotonic dystrophy discusses treatment with you.

You can locate these physicians in Jacksonville, FL at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville 904-953-6915 and MDA 904-296-7434.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Arnold Zedd
