How Can Low Heart Rate Be Treated?

I am male, 80 yrs. old and am taking lisinopril. In an effort to strengthen my heart I try to raise my heart rate to 60% of my maximum heart rate. However, I can not raise my pulse above 80 no matter how fast I try to walk. Am I denying myself the benefits of exercise if I can't raise my heart rate, and if not, how can I monitor my effort if not by my pulse?

Hello,

It's a good sign to have heart rate within the low normal range. On the contrary, the high heart rate is a bad sign as it means the heart exert more efforts to meet the body needs. You can watch your fitness with your respiratory rate and after how many minutes you get shortness of breath.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Mahmoud Abouibrahim
