How Can Liver Cirrhosis And Kidney Failure Be Treated?

My 57 yr old sister has acute liver failure as a result of cirrhosis and has now gone into kidney failure and encephalophothy. Going for CT scan now and dialysis in morning. she has been in ICU for 2 weeks from aceites causing her perforated ulcer surgery wound to not close. All super sudden. I live 1500 miles away...how long do you think she has? I don t want her to die alone....was already there (in Detroit) twice in last 12 days...what do you think...will she hang in for days/wks? No doc s to speak with in the moment & wondering if I should be getting on a flight...

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This is serious disease if cirrhosis is present and quitting alcohol is the most important thing that should be done. Also, medications which are hematotoxic should be avoided. This is necessary to prevent disease progression which is lethal in most cases. At early stages it can be treated with these measures but but in case of progression. Diet should be balanced and healthy and get regular exercise. Limit high-carbohydrate foods such as bread, grits, rice, potatoes, and corn. And cut down on drinks with lots of sugar like sports drinks and juice. If there is viral hepatitis as underlying cause then antiviral medications are required.

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
