How Can Kidney Stones Be Treated?
My sister in law s doctor told her over the phone he thinks a problem she may be having with her back is due to kidney stones. Is this reasonable and how can she remedy it? As a side light, it s an honor to have someone with your experience available. Ron Boto, Dallas, TX

Ureteric stones can present as back pain in many people. CT scan and urine analysis can confirm the presence of stones. Once confirmed management will depend on the type and size of the stone. Generally, small stones will pass in urine by itself by drinking plenty of water and taking diuretics. Larger stones may necessitate procedures like external shock wave lithotripsy.
