How Can Itching On The Back Be Treated?

I have always had itchy skin on my back past 26 years. I have back scratchers in every room of the house. In the past couple months, itching has become worse, interrupting my sleep or preventing sleep. I am just recovering from an intestinal flu, with diarrrhea and vomiting. I have a permanent ileostomy which can cause rapid dehydration, and was experiencing symptoms of that, which I am very familiar with, so went to the ER, was given a liter of fluids. All blood work came back negative for bacterial infection and C-Diff. I was told I had a viral infection. Ok. Makes sense. Was told to increase my probiotic supp. to twice daily. The itching may be a result of dehydration, but it seems so intense past two days, especially at night. Liver involvement?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It may be due to chronic urticaria. We have to rule out other rare possibilities like obstructive jaundice.

As a first line management, you can apply low potency steroid creams like betamethasone for symptomatic relief.

If the lesion persists, it is better to consult a dermatologist and get evaluated.

You can also take antihistamines like pheniramine for itching.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
