How Can Irregular Bowel Movement Be Treated?

I am a 79 yr.old male. 3 years since open heart surgery. My stools are not regular and when I do have a movement its soft. My eating habits include buffets. How ever I usually do not have a movement for 3 or 4 days. I often do not have movements every day. This is silly , but do you think I have a tape worm ?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Well if you have a tapeworm there are other features as well which you have not mentioned. There is probably low fibres in your diet. If I see a patient with similar complaints in my clinics I advice to take diets with high fibres like brown rice green leafy vegetables, fruits. Drink a lot of water which will help to clear bowels as well. If it doesn't help and if you are troubled then you should prolly take laxatives.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
