hi,
welcome to hcm
thanks for the query
you are in borderline hypertension. you should have to continue follow-up of your blood pressure at regular intervals
genetic factors and lifestyle plays a big role in hypertension.since you are only 17 you also have to other secondary causes of hypertension
you quit your smoking and alcohol
decrease salt intake
obesity, lack of exercise are risk factors
individuals who have one or two parents with hypertension, high blood pressure is twice as common
do regular exercise.take fruits and green leafy veg.avoid stress .

Ok.... So here I am again asking a question for opinions.. Seriously I don t think I trust my doctor . He was new to me a month ago and I went in with a BP of 140/100 stressed out and overweight 248 lbs and 5ft 7 and drinking and smoking. So now 1 month later.. I quit smoking when I walked out his door (social smoker maybe like a pack a week) but I still quit and no drinking same day (about 20-30 beers a week)... I have lost 28 pounds. And I am doing cardio 4 times a week and eating tons of really healthy organic fresh foods. Ones that are targeted for lowering BP and Cholesterol... So now.. As of 3 days ago... I started taking only 1/2 of my prescribed dose of my Amlodipine which was 5mg. So for the last 2 days I have only taken 2.5mg. When I was taking the 5mg my BP was dropping really low like 92/64 low... Now with only the 2.5mg I am staying in the 107-111/68-74 ranges.... I called the doctor to tell him the great news and his nurse was like.. Yeah well that could be a fluke don t stop taking meds. I don t think I need them anymore. This doctor has been very ambitious about several items with my health which I find nice as he doesn t ignore my concerns.. But also I feel like he is treating me like a gereatric patient at the same time.. As this is a large percentage of his patients.. i am only 38 years old.. Female by the way.... :o)..... Any opinons from experience or medical knowledge.. Thanks.

Hi, may I answer your health querieDear Ask The Doctor: I am an asian male aged 52. I dont drink or smoke and cycle roughly 10km for five days a week. I am slightly overweight. I have never taken a single day off my work due to illness for the last 15 years. I have been under stress for the last 3 months because I am trying to put my son to college in the states. Recently my doctor told me that I had high blood pressure because the lower reading was 96. He has recommended that I go on medication which I have begun. What I would like to know is firstly how bad is my situation? Secondly is it neccessary to go on medication without trying other means like reducing weight. etc? s right now ? My husband's heart is beating loudly and seems to be beating irregularly. I took his blood pressure and it was normal. His heart rate was 102bpm. He also has an urge to cough periodically. He's had these episodes happen before and the cough has helped at times. Do we need to be concerned? His father died from heart disease and started having an irregular heart beat when he was 35.
