How Can High Cholesterol Be Controlled?

Good morning Doc, hope you can help? My doctor told me that I have inherited high cholecterol from family. Recent result shown my cholesterol mmol/L 7.2 and HDL-cholesterol mmol/L 3.1 and LDL-cholesterol mmol/L 3.8, total/HDL ratio 2.3.

My doctor wanting to put me on cholesterol tablet and I'm not keen, I'm 5.3 inches weight 50kg, exercise 7 days a week, walk 1.3ohrs from monday to friday, saturday I run for 2 hrs and 2hrs gym workout on sunday. I take muesli and fruits for breakfast, lunch chicken salad without dressing and small portion of rice at dinner or grill fish someday for dinner. Do you think I should change my diet to get my cholesterol down and how. As it is my diet is so control and the only think is I will have to cut my coffee in the morning. I only have a cup of coffee and 2 cups of teas a day with low fat milk and the drink 3 ltr of water every day. Can you help? Nora Thanx

Hi Nora

I have read the details provided by you and I would like to tell you that Familial hypercholesterolemia usually require some cholesterol lowering drugs during the initial part of the treatment to bring down the levels.

You are on a good exercise and diet schedule so need not change that. Along with that I would like to start the cholesterol lowering meds as advised by your doctor. Take them for minimum of 3 months after that check your cholesterol levels again. Hopefully this strategy will help you and once they are low u can stop the medicine and continue with your healthy lifestyle routine.

wish you good health
