my son is having a gout flare up.both elbows and hand swollen. very painful lower back. he has been battling this now off and on for 8-10 years. nothing seems to help much medically. he has changed his diet, maybe not as much as he should--but he has made changes. what can he do to help himself?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms seem to be related to gout. Some advice that I can give to you for the treatment are:
-Use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). I suggest Ibuprofen daily
-There are several prescribed medications such as Allopurinol which limit the amount of uric acid your body makes.

You should consult your doctor about this treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
