How Can Glaucoma Be Treated?

I have been recently diagnosed as a suspect for glaucoma. Eye pressure in my left eye has been 29 in Feb., 34 in March, and 30 in April. I recently went to an opthomologist and he recommended laser surgery for both eyes. I am 70 years old. My appointment was Tuesday and he scheduled the left eye for Friday. He did not believe drops would work because of the structure of my eye. He said the surgery is done once. I ve red online that it lasts only five years? I am concerned that after five years, I won t have any other options. Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The details about the surgery you read online was for open angle glaucoma and this laser surgery is for angle closure glaucoma. Both are different diseases. In your case with laser, we will create a way for the fluid in the eye to move so that it doesn't collect and raise the pressure. It will last forever.

Hope it helps.
