How Can Feet Cramps With Pain And Swelling Be Treated While Taking Enbrel Injection For RA?

I am 61 year old female. for the last 3 weeks my hands have been aching and are slightly swollen. I am also getting cramps in my feet. I find it diificult to type this and playing the piano hurts. 5 years ago a dr. had me taking enbrel shots in my stomach for RA. I did it for 6 months and symptoms cleared up. My tests never said I had RA, but he said I probably did. Could that be true? or is it something else. Help!

Hello,

Your symptoms could be related to arthritis or any other metabolic disorder. Fluid retention could also mimic this situation. We can not exclude RA, although at this age, it is less likely. Coming to this point, I would recommend consulting with your attending physician for a physical exam and some tests:
- Complete blood count, PCR, ESR
- Uric acid plasma levels
- Kidney and liver function tests
- Blood electrolytes

A cardiac ultrasound may be needed, especially if you experience shortness of breath.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
