How Can Elevated Cholesterol Levels Be Managed?

I just had blood work, and it shows that my cholesterol is very high. I am 67 years old. I started exercising more last year as I am overweight. I am slowly losing the weight. My doctor recommends that I take Simvastatin. I m concerned about the possible memory loss side effect. I have a sister who was on this drug for a long time. She now has serious memory problems and cannot care for herself. Is there a safer way or drug to lower my cholesterol?

Hello,

Low dose Simvastatin/Pravastatin or Bile acid binding resins.

Statins are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for high cholesterol. However, recently there have been concerns over the memory loss while taking these medications.

However, as per the scientific studies done Simvastatin and Pravastatin have the fewest side effects in this class of medications. It's also found that lower doses produced fewer side effects in general.

Apart from these statins, bile acid binding resins like Cholestyramine or Colesevelam are also unlikely to cause memory loss hence they can be taken after consulting your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
