How Can Elevated Blood Pressure Levels Be Treated?

I was out in blood pressure meds lisonopryl about 3 1/2 yrs ago and took for about 1 1/2 yrs then was switched to metroprolol! Didn t like how it made me feel and was sent to. Cardiologists wore a monitor and he said he thought I was having reaction to meteoroll and should try to get off meds! Did fine if awhile and then bp started coming back up! Dr told me to take diltiazem when it get above 160 on top or 90 on bottom numbers! So I have been! Which is only about once a week! Then when I went back he wanted to know how it was going g was I having side effects from taking it daily! I reminded him of how I was told to Take it and questioned was that wrong and he Said no that s fine just nobody does it that way! My husband was in room both times with me! My no was really high while at dr that visit and he checked my bp cuff I have to make sure my reading are correct and they are! Then tells me I don t have to come back for 7 months! Is the way I m taking it ok or should I go to another dr? Help! Feeling puzzled!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.

May I know what is your age? Are you suffering from any other diseases? Is your lipid profile, kidney tests are normal?

If your age is below 55 years then first choice of medicines are Angiotensin receptor blockers.
And if your age is > 55 years without any comorbidity then thiazide diuretics or cacium channel blocker (diltiazem) are first choice drugs.

however if you have ant comorbid condition then scenario may change.
So it is better to consult your physician for that.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards
Dr. Hiren
