How Can Elevated ALT And AST Levels Be Treated?

Hi Good Afternoon. I recently did a total blood work and got results for my FBS, RFT, LFT and Lipid profile. Most of the tests are accompanied with a Normal range and with some reading up on medical sites I m comfortable with my Cholesterol levels as I can lower them with changes to my diet. It was Cholesterol 262 with Critical ; 250mg/dl and Triglyceride 157 with range Boderline 150-199 mg/dl HDL 52 LDL 179 VLDL 31 CHOL/HDL Ratio 5.0 However my AST is 74 with the range given 8-33U/L and my ALT is 51 with range given 3-35 U/L. Alkaline phospate 293, Bilirubin total 0.7, direct 0.3and indirect 0.4 Albumin is 5.3 , Globulin 3.0 and SGGT 22 Now I was reading up on Hepitatis etc but I don t have any of the symptoms. I use echniacea herbal supplement everyday to help with my allergics and sustability to colds and flus so I m not sure if this is why my levels are high Should I be worried about my AST and ALT levels and what can I do to normalize them?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

I am not really bothered about your liver enzymes. I commonly see these values with my patients who are doing healthy. AST and ALT are just high normal and can be expected in a septagenarian female because of various reasons including old age.

If you do not have any health problems I suggest you to remain calm and these values should not raise apprehensions.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
