hi mam, i can understand your concern.to speak frankly, there is no permanent medical treatment for diverticulitis but with surgical care, we can acheive nearly complete relief.he seems to have suffered from episodes of uncomplicated acute diverticulitis.surgery is indicated mostly in complicated cases like peritonitis, severe sepsis, fistula formation, abdominal or pelvic abscess etc.as he is not suffering from any of these complications, surgery is not recommended.the following are some of the measures he can follow to prevent the episode to some extent:
1)a life long high fiber diet would significantly reduce the recurrence of acute diverticulitis.
2)studies also suggest that vegetarian diet also reduces the frequency of episodes and hospital admissions.
3)empirical therapy with broad spectrum antibiotics like ceftriaxone,amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, ciprofloxacin, metronidazole are very effective in uncomplicated cases.
hope my answer is clear.any other queries to be answered, please let me know.its my pleasure to guide you.thank you.take care.bye.
