How Can Diabetes Be Kept Under Control?

I just found out I have type 2 diabetes. I can not consume artificial sugars as they give me migraines. Where does that leave me for my favorite drinks like coke? Also I still would like to enjoy drinking. What control drug would still allow me to drink alcohol? I can t stand needles. Can I control this without checking my blood?

Hi,
Diabetes is a lifestyle disease. I would suggest you to introduce lifestyle modifications like regular physical activity, cut down on carbohydrates in diet and reduction of stress in daily life.
Physical activity should include activities like brisk walking for at least 40 minutes for 4 days a week.
Cut down on carbhohydrates essential means you should get down your cola intake to minimum and also other carbhohydate rich rice intake.
Alcohol intake has to be moderate and never exceed the daily prescribed limits. Uncontrolled alcohol intake can worsen glycemic control and causes dangerous effects on many organs including liver.
Present antidiabetics usually doesn't interact with alcohol intake. So need not to worry if you are in limits. I would usually advice my patients to give up on routine alcohol consumption and go for occasional social drinking within daily limits.
If you have a good control that is defined as HbA1C value of less than 6-6.5, then glucose level testing can be done half yearly and the number of needle pricks can be reduced to minimum.
I hope the above information helps you. Thanks for writing into healthcaremagic.
* Alcohol moderate consumption: 2 drinks/ day (60-70ml of 40% alcohol like rum) with alcohol free days in a week.
