How Can Dementia Be Treated?

What would be the latest medical achievement for treating old age dementia? My uncle is 89 years old and has dementia that it is very difficult to treat. He still lives at home with his wife (who is 87 on her own) and has a family to care for him, but it has been increasingly difficult as it requires 24hr of monitoring. Is there are any medications that are more effective in treating his urge to wander outside of the house as he thinks that someone wants to get him - paranoid thoughts.

Hello,

As per your clinical history is concerned, dementia has many pathological causes so treatment based on root cause only so follow like this:

1) Do a clinical evaluation by your Doctor [psychiatrist] and do few investigations like [CBC with differential, TSH & MRI scan].
2) Discuss with your Doctor about prescription medication like [sertraline] and vitamin B 12 injections.
3) Consult with a clinical psychologist for a planned psychotherapy and TMS.

Do few preventive steps such as:

1) Take steps to control stress, to increase your resilience and to boost your self-esteem.
2) Take help from family and friends, especially in times of crisis.
3) Get treatment at the earliest sign of a problem to help prevent your problem from worsening.
4) Consider getting long-term maintenance treatment to help prevent a relapse of symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Uday Nath Sahoo
