How Can Delayed Physical Development In A Toddler Be Treated?
Hello doctor, My almost 3 year old son has a genetic condition(mutated gene) which is keeping him delayed from natural development. He just started walking with the help of intensive pt & afos. And he also have too many feeding issues, doesn’t chew and eats only puréed textures. He really did good on breast milk and I fed him the pumped breast milk until 14 months. His milestones were also on time until 1 year, except he crawled at 13 months. He really thrived on breast milk and weight gain was good. He will be 3 next month and is under weight(26 pounds) and height is in 7%. height wise he grew fine until he was 2 and now the height is also behind. My question to you is now that we had our second kid last week and I am producing plenty of breast milk can we try giving my older one to see if things will change ? We tried everything like high calorie milk like pediasure and some high calorie protein powder, and adding plain calories to food like bene calorie etc. he is allergic to something and vomits everything and everyday when we add any type of calories. Please suggest me if I can give him the break milk to see if he would gain any weight and height. Thank you!
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
At his age, 3, breast milk would not add any additional benefit. He is past the age where it would be able to help him nutritionally. It is possible that the genetic mutation is the reason that he is not growing well. If he is genetically predisposed to a reduced height then the number or amount of calories that he uses will not have any effect.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
