How Can Constipation In A Toddler Be Treated?

It is about my 2 years old daughter. She is afraid to potty, she holds it and she cries a lot when I take her to the toilet. The stool is very hard and to me it looks thicker than what I would think should come out of her. I give her prune concentrated daily ( lately increase to twice daily), she only drinks water and lots of it, fruits and veggies and lately I read not to give her peanut butter and milk or milk products. I help her with my hands pressing around her rectum. She always bleeds a little. I want to know what to do besides what I am doing. Or, am I doing something wrong?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You are doing the right things giving her the prunes and fruit and vegetables, please go on with these and also add pears in the diet as these also have a lot of fiber and help with the stools.

Another thing to help her with is adding some fiber supplements. You can access them in the pharmacy and give them daily after you dilute them in a glass of fruit juice. Fiber supplements make stools smoother and easier to pass.

You should see an improvement in a few days with this supplement. It is healthy to just go on and use them daily for weeks to help her bowel.

If she is not better in a week of adding the extra fiber supplements, then you can give her Lactulose syrup one tablespoon a day. This will increase her bowel movement frequency and can be used for a week or two while you are also using the fiber supplements.

If there is no improvement with the above, then please see a doctor to examine her and better decide on further steps.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Zotaj Antoneta
