How Can Congestive Heart Failure Be Treated?
my father who has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and has a single blockage was prescribed isosorbide mn er but did not get a full understanding from the cardiologist the purpose of the script. this is not his regular cardiologist and has reservations about starting the medicine

Isosorbide mononitrate is a medication that dilates veins in the body, which helps the heart by decreasing the blood flow from the body to the heart and preventing it from being too much for the heart to handle, as well as decreasing the pressure the heart has to push against.
It also helps dilate coronary arteries which provide blood to the heart (the blood in these arteries actually supply oxygen to the heart, this is not the blood that the heart pumps). This can help with chest pain that is from blockage in these arteries.
In your father's case, it sounds like this medication would be reasonable, along with the other medications used for heart failure (such as an ACE inhibitor and beta blocker).
