How Can Chronic Cough While On Macrobid Be Treated?
Thank you. I ve been on generic Microbid 100 mg taking one capsule Friday at dinner; two capsules Saturday with meals, two on Sunday (w/meals) and two today, also w/meals. I ve developed a bad cough ad am taking an over the counter medicine to help in addition to cough drops as needed. Am coughing up lots of phlegm also. I m taking the Macrobid to treat a stubborn UTI, as the first antibiotic didn t quell the UTI (returned about a week after ending the antibiotic at that time. I m without a practioner at this time (he retired, and I found it difficult to find another). My first visit with Dr. Mapili associated with Multicare, will not be until 9/8/17! She has a Nurse Practioner; should I ask for a urologist s name and number? By the way I haven t suffered a UTI in over 20 years! And, am using Vagi-Fem to help prevent the UTI s. BUT, the pharmacy has given me generic ;yuva-fem; I wonder if it s not strong enough? Thanks for your help. Berta

Hi,
Developing a bad cough is due to an acute viral infection. Should take:
- The cough medicine you already started (cough drops). I hope it is mucolytics.
- Anti-histamine at night to stop the cough spasms.
- Oral rehydration salts with lots of water to keep well hydrated.
- Apply vapour rub on your chest at night.
- Aerosol-therapy can help.
If after a couple of days, there is no improvement, should consult with your primary as might need prescription meds. A cough is not caused by Macrobid. Furthermore, Macrobid won't help with upper respiratory tract infection.
