How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

I've had a chronic cough that just won't go away. I've been told it "may" be caused by my medication for the Rheum. Arthritis I have had this past 6 yrs, but I've had this cough for longer than this. It usually is non-productive, except when I go into a coughing fit, causing me to gag and eventually cough up foamy, white phlem. It has also cause me to throw up when I've coughed so hard. By this time my lower back hurts during the coughing and around my shoulders. It can also be started when I get excited and/or start laughing. I've seen my doctor and she prescribed a nasal spray, but it doesn't seem to help when I use it regularly. Any suggestions on what may be causing this would be so helpful. Thank you. Carole :)

Hi,
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.
I have gone through your query.

According to your clinical history you are having chronic cough for years. Most likely your cough is because of allergic in origin or it can be due to tuberculosis. It is very unlikely of the side effects of anti rheumatic drugs.
As your symptoms still persist you need a detailed evaluation to find out the exact cause of this cough. You have to take X-ray chest to rule out some lung problems. You might require a sputum examination to check for TB,rarely bronchoscopy is also required.
I suggest you to consult a pulmonologist for proper diagnosis and early treatment Hope this information helps.

Wishing you good health.
With regards

Dr.Shinas Hussain.
