How Can Chronic Constipation With Weight Gain Be Treated?

Hi, I have chronic constipation and have for approximately 2 years. I have had colonics and a colonoscopy but the constipation keeps reoccurring. For the past three months no only do I have irregular bowel movements that are pencil thin the upper part of my stomach is extremely distended. I recently had a CT scan for the upper and lower and the doctor told me I was full of bowel. When I asked him if perhaps I have some type of obstruction to cause the backup problem he answered with that I should get another colonic and do not take any laxatives and eat roughage. I am 60 years old and eat fairly well, no fast foods, etc. Three months ago I had a small hernia under my belly button fixed and since then from my belly button upward my stomach stays blown up in the front and on the sides. I work out two hours a day and am gaining wait and can not fasten any of my pants or skirts. Sorry about the long story, do you have any suggestions?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

2 years is a long time to suffer from constipation. One needs to get to the cause as soon as possible and get treated accordingly. Continue the laxatives, stool softeners whichever suits you the most. Dietary changes or permutation and combinations can help to solve the problem to a large extent.

But the history of para-umbilical hernia with bloating of upper abdomen is suggestive of a possible cause. Contrast enhanced study of stomach and intestines with Radiology or CT scan can help to get the possible cause and get treated accordingly. Your good detailed history helps every Doctor you consult so no worry about lengthy question. Be assure.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
