How can chronic constipation while on Metoprolol be treated?

I have recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure. I have been prescribed metopropolol which made me feel like I was dragging around a 20 lb. weight. I had trouble walking a flight of stairs. Next prescription was for veramidal and I experienced extreme fatigue. I am 75 and had a bowel resection four years ago. Both these medications caused severe constipation which scares me because I was told to avoid constipation all together. I know these medications are beta and calcium blockers. Any other classification to try?
