How can chronic constipation while on Metoprolol be treated?

I have recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure. I have been prescribed metopropolol which made me feel like I was dragging around a 20 lb. weight. I had trouble walking a flight of stairs. Next prescription was for veramidal and I experienced extreme fatigue. I am 75 and had a bowel resection four years ago. Both these medications caused severe constipation which scares me because I was told to avoid constipation all together. I know these medications are beta and calcium blockers. Any other classification to try?

I understand your concern. Some advice that I can give you are:

1) Drink more water.
2) Eat more fiber, especially soluble, non-fermentable fiber.
3) Exercise more.
4) Drink coffee, especially caffeinated coffee.
5) Take senna, an herbal laxative.
6) Eat probiotic foods or take probiotic supplements.
7) Over-the-counter or prescription laxatives.
