How Can Chills, Diarrhea, Fever And Weakness Be Treated?

My husband started feeling poorly last night. Had chills and then bad diarrhea. Like water. He has been sleeping all day and is very weak now. His temp was a little over 99 a few hours ago. I just took it and it s 101.6. I m making him drink now as he s probably dehydrated. What should I do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Good day to you. I have gone through your husband history. He seems to be suffering from Acute Gastroenteritis.
I would treat him by
1) Oral rehydration Salt ( ORS) solution. He can drink it as much he can to prevent dehydration and mineral loss.
2) Start Metronidazole ( Flagyl) 400mg 3 times a day for 5 days. If he is not allergic to Flagyl.
3) Give him soft food like boiled rice without spices.
4) Avoid giving him milk as it will not tolerated by gastrointestinal tract.
5) If he has epigastric pain, give him Ranitidine 150 mg 2 times a day. You can get it over the counter.
6) Paracetamol for fever.
7) Take plenty fluids and rest.
If diarrhea still persists after 3 days, consult your doctor for further investigations.
