How can chest congestion and chronic cough be treated?

Last Wednesday Jan 10th, I came down with a cold. The cold got progressively worse with a fever and then moving into the lungs. As of this past Mondy, the 15th, the fever is gone but my chest is still congested. I am constantly coughing trying to break up the mucus in my chest. I went to my pharmacy and the pharmasist recommended Mussinex D. I have been taking the last couple of days and my chest is still blocked. I am scheduled to meet with my Dr. tomorrow. Any idea what I may have, a bacterial infection in my lungs and I am not getting better? Not sure what I have? When I go to my Dr. tomorrow, is there anything he can give me to break this up and dry me out and hopefully (if bacterial) kill it?

Hello,

Some advices that I can give to you are:
-Stay hydrated. An upper respiratory tract infection like a cold or flu causes postnasal drip.
If it is a bacterial infection, you should take antibiotics.
- Try a menthol cough drop.
-Take steamy showers, and use a humidifier.
-Remove irritants from the air.
-Take medications to treat coughs like cough suppressors, decongestants.
Talk with the doctor about these treatment options.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi
