How Can Cactus Thorn Injury On The Foot Be Treated?

Hello! I am 25 yrs old, 5'6'' and 130 lbs. Today a cactus with big barbs (not the small fine ones) fell on the top of my foot by my pinkey toe and embeded a few barbs in my foot. I got them out best i could, later soaked my foot cleaned it out and so on. Now at the end of the day my foot is killing me. Its turning red, just a wee bit swollen and just hurts to the point where i cannot put weight on it. Should i be concerned, or sleep on it?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Unlike some inert foreign bodies that can often be left alone (e.g., metal or glasss),plant foreign bodies are best removed whenever possible. The magnitude
of the problems caused by cactus spine injury is inversely proportion to the size of the spines.
The usual treatment for cactus thorn injury is the application of topical corticosteroids.Do take Inj tetanus toxoid booster dose,if given more than 5 years back.
