How Can Bowel Incontinence Be Treated While Suffering From Alzheimer's Disease?
My mother is 90 years old has Alzheimer's she has a bowel movement and doesn't know every time we bring her to the bathroom she had a bowel movement and as I clean her I can still feel stool up her rectum it's been like this for a while would like to know what to do
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Unfortunately this problem does not have an easy answer. Often as Alzheimer's progresses to the end stages, patients lose the ability to control bowel and bladder. This has to do with damage to the parts of the brain that allow control. If she is retaining stool she may need an enema to get her cleaned out. Talk to her doctor about whether or not this might help.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
