How Can Blood Sugar Level Be Reduced?

May husband has a viral infection and the doctor put him on prednisone which is causing his blood sugar to raise rapidly tonight. His latest blood sugar reading was over 400. What can we do to bring this down tonight. We will call the doctor first thing in the morning. His usual blood sugars are between 100 and 160. Thanks.

Hello,

I understand your concern. You husband's current blood sugar levels are indeed very high and should be brought down to normal as soon as possible. In order to give a more accurate answer I would need more information on your husband's diabetes type and the medication he takes. While insulin is the fastest way to bring blood sugars down, I am unable to advice you on this and ok the correction dose. However there are three things he can do in the mean time:
1. Hydration. The more water he drinks the better, but two glasses are the recommended amount to start with. This will dilute the sugar burden in the blood.
2. Exercise. Taking a long walk around the neighborhood or performing light exercise, depending on his health condition is very helpful.
3. Eating a protein snack helps stabilize blood glucose faster.
Also, a pinch of cinnamon on his protein snack can be of great help.

And of course, seeing a doctor first thing in the morning is the sensible thing to do.
I hope this helps.
Wishing you good health and the best.
