How Can Behavioral Disorder In A Teenager Be Managed?

My son is 16 yrs. old and from birth has had strange or not typical behaviors. Things such as rolling over at 12 days of age, at 4 1/2 months he suddenly would not be able to sleep without me driving in car radio on low till he finally passed out , this continued until he was around 10 months of age, walked at 10 months, didn t speak understandable words until 2 1/2, but understood everything you said to him, figured out the parental lock code on TV remote 4 different times, wouldn t eat from a spoon until 1 1/2 yrs, telling him no was simply useless, time outs were just a joke, basically like trying to coral a lightning bolt in a jar, terrified of pictures being taken (I have one pic from age 3 1/2 months) could not have others taken until he was 4 1/2. He was diagnosed ADHD at age 4 placed on medications with some success, at 9 yrs old diagnosed bi polar, 12 yrs diagnosed with behavioural issues more meds. Law has been involved several times because of his tantrums either at school or home, I have left Drs. appts because of his behavior, left stores because of his behavior I am at my wit s end I don t think the diagnosis to this point are correct but don t know where to turn for appropriate help. Any advice would be welcomed.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The behavior of your son has to be learned rather than brainy. Many of the symptoms correspond to borderline personality disorder and some bipolar. Did anyone tell you about BPD? Work with your psychiatrist for a satisfactory treatment. If you require more of my help in this aspect, please use this URL. http://goo.gl/aYW2pR. Make sure that you include every minute details possible.

Hope this answers your query. Available for further clarifications.

Good luck.
