My husband broke his tibia and fibula at the ankle, had surgery April 11th and had a plate and pins and rod put in been healing good. Scab came off surgery site about a week ago and today we noticed it is getting red and smells like fish, what do we need to do?
This sounds like postoperative wound infection. You need to see doctor to take swab and prescribe adequte antibiotics. ALso, it may be necessary to open the wound and clean this out. Try a nonprescription medicine such as octanisept or antibiotic ointment if you cant see doctor. l. it is important not to scratch or manipulate the wound to prevent infection. You may cover the wound with a thin layer of petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, and a nonstick bandage.
Wish you good heath. Regards
