How Can An Areola Nevus Which Is Itchy And Raised Be Treated?

Hello, I am a 30 year old female and I just noticed that at the edge of the areola, I have a lighter brown area that is raised (raised like a rash spot) and very itchy. I am of east indian descent, so my skin is naturally darker and this is an odd coloured patch for me in that area.

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

If the patch that you have on your aerial is itchy and raised, it is most likely affected by a fungal skin infection. These can appear on any part of the body, but many women get them under and around their breasts because of sweat that is trapped in their bra. Fungal infections favor heat and moisture. So many women can get these on the sweaty your areas of their body. Furthermore, the fellow skin infection is contagious, so it can be transmitted by touch also from you to someone else or possibly from someone on to you (including a nursing baby).

Either way, the itching and pale color will resolve if you put an antifungal cream on the area. The cream should contain an active ingredient that has the ending of the word with "-azole" including miconazole nitrate, clotrimazole, or terconazole. If you apply it to the affected area twice-daily the spot should fade within a week or two.

If this does not relieve your symptoms, I suggest you see your women's healthcare provider such as a gynecologist or midwife for an examination to rule out any other causes.

I hope that I was adequately able to answer question today, and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
