How Can Alcoholism Be Treated?

My daughter was just recently released from Good Samaritan Hospital after a week's stay to recover from alcohol abuse. It was her second "crash". She never did the work the first time, five years ago, and has done significant damage to her body. She is committed to getting intense help this time because I cannot allow her to continue to live with me if she doesn't. We're looking for information. Have a couple friends who have been through the out-patient treatment program, and felt it really helped them. Would so appreciate advice and information. She spoke with Dr. Bradley while in Good Sam, and he recommended this program.Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern

1. in alcoholics, duration and symptoms are important for diagnosis of ALD [alcoholic liver disease]
2. Avoidance of alcohol is the gold standard for treatment, with carbohydrate rich diet.
3. avoid hepatotoxic drugs
4. check regularly with Bilirubin, BUN, Prothrombin Time and Serum proteins levels.
5. Hepato protective drugs like silymarin along with laxative like lactulose will help alleviate the symptoms.
6. whether or not it is curable will depend upon the stage identified by the physician, i.e. is it compensated or decompensated liver problem.

PS

Management: is based on the stage of disease at which therapy is started
• Abstinence: cessation of alcohol is the single most important treatment, without this all other therapies are of limited value.
• Diet: low fat, high carbohydrate and salt-free high protein diet recommended (essential amino acids)
• Steroids: to suppress inflammation
• Antioxidants
• Treatment of Complications
• Liver transplant

1.In Ayurveda we consider addiction under the topic of 'madataya' which means "intoxication"; Although madataya describes intoxication of any kind, alcohol was the original reference.

PS.Charak Samhita Chikitsa Sthan 24.

2. substitute for alcohol with similar efficacy but with no undesirable side effects include
. shrikhand assav
. kharjuradi manth
. counselling & family support
PS. Medicine which I usually prescribe in my clinic for the same is/are:
.shuddh kucchla [purified nuxvomica]: 120mg
ras sindoor: 125mg.. both taken with honey thrice a day.

3. apart from this,hepato-protective drugs: kasni, katuki, nimba, amrita, bhringraj, bhuiamlaki : acts as hepato cellular regenerators,
immuno-modulators with anti viral activity which and helps improving liver function due to side effects of alcohol.
