How Can Acid Reflux Be Treated In An Autistic Child?

Hi, my son was born with Autism and had severe reflux although we did not know until he was six (about the reflux). Dx d with PDD- NOS ar age 2 ish but obviousin hind site. Never slept more than 3 hours in a 24 hour period. At age 6, melatonin recommended and fell asleep in 15 minutes. Did not stay asleepfor quite a few more years. Was on a ver low dose (a liquid squirt Natrol Melatonn. We stopped abou 2 years ago and slowly he went to bed later and later until it was past 5:00 AM. More a symptom of lifestyle as my husband works from home at night and of course kids on the spectrum love the computer. My husband is a web Designer. Recently my husband suggested we try Melatonin again. H was on it from 6 -16. 10 yrears and we did not know it could be dangerous. Both our PCP and Psychopharmacologist/Psychiatrist said it was fine. About 3 weeks ago we started 3 mg.Natrol tablets. It knocks him out within 1 maybe 1.5 hours, sometimes much lwss. Is this dangerous? Also he seems to be more agitated but simultaneously with some other changes (big) that occurred. He goes to bed 6 hours earlier now. Wondering if I should cut pill in half. Is 3 mgs a high dose for 19 year old. 6 3 240 lbs. Any advice, Thank you! Warmly, A mom who is burnt out. He is freaked out over the whole Trump/Isis/Russia/Boston stuff as weland feels like the world is falling apart and says everything goes wrong :(

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

First, let me tell you that your child has improved a lot as age advances. As per your description it seems child is also habitants of seeing computer or TV or mobile during night times.

Now if you are giving medicine that's fine but definitely you can do the dose half. and gradually stop over a period of 3 months. Try to make child sleep during 10 pm and keep the room light switch off.

No mobile, computer and TV nearby. you should be there and tell the story. gradually divert child attention from electronic stuff. this will help the child to regain sleep pattern back to normal.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
