How Can Absence Seizures Be Treated?

I have a 16 year old daughter with absence seizures that originate in the frontal lobes. She was changed to new medication 1 year ago (had to go from one medication to two) and since then has been significantly struggling in school (missing assignments, bad test scores) She does not put much effort into her studies and becomes irritable when confronted about the missing homework often blaming it on her teachers misplacing her work. As parents any suggestions we provide are met with anger as she does not think she has any problems and we are not letting her have her independence We are struggling with what approach to use. She verbalizes goals for her future and can discuss information that she learns in class but doesn t seem to correlate that she will need to work hard to obtain the grades she may want. I have heard this is a common problem with teens. Do you think the meds are to blame, her age or does she suffer from depression?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

If symptoms persist, better to consult a neurologist and plan for an MRI brain to rule out possible intracranial (inside the brain) causes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
