How Can Abdominal Pain With Acidity And Vomiting Be Treated?

Hi, my father suddenly suffered sever abdominal pain on Friday evening. He had eaten nothing special and the same food as my mum. He did not sleep that night due to the continued pain (central in the abdomen). Saturday he was very washed out, no appetite and cold sweats. The pain changed to what he described as dull pain plus acidity. Today he has continued to feel washed out but a little better, however he developed hiccups out of the blue and later this afternoon and this evening has vomitted violently. The vomit is what my Mum can only descfribe as a brown liquid which looks like cold black tea with a fishy smell (he has not eaten any fish for a while). He has not eaten since Friday and has only had a small amount of fluids. My mother called NHS Direct but they seemed less than interested but she does intend on calling their GP in the morning. My father is 78 years old, fairly fit for his age (high blood pressure for which he takes medication) and never ever complains about anything so we know he must be in some discomfort. Any suggestions or should my Mum just continue with our local GP in the morning?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

These symptoms relate to intestine infection with gastritis.

Primary guidelines till he meets local general physician:
- Give PPI as Omeprazole drug with sips of water morning and evening before meals.
- Allow clear liquids more in amount at session’s interval.
- Once liquid is tolerated after PPI, give soft, bland diet in small amounts.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
