How Can A Stroke Be Prevented From Reoccurring?

My 90 year old father in law had a mild stroke about three weeks ago. It was several days before he told us about the event and we did get him to visit his GP. He is able to walk but has weakness on his left side and is using a cane. The doctor did a MRI and my father in law is now taking therapy. My concern is lack of information. We are concerned about the possibility of him having another more severe stroke. His doctor has provided any education on stroke prevention. My father in law does take high blood pressure, chlosterol medication and is being treated for diabetes. What should we know about the reoccurance of stroke? He is staying with us during his recovery but we fear he might have another stroke. thanks.

I understand your concern about reoccurance of stroke in your father in law. High blood pressure, Diabetes, high cholesterol, Smoking, alcohol and physical inactivity are the risk factors for recurrence of stroke which can be modified.

See that he continues to take antihypertensives and Aspirin (which is a blood thinner which helps to prevent stroke) and continue using antidiabetic medications/insulin and check blood glucose levels along with HbA1c regularly. Use statins for high cholesterol.

Life style modification: Cessation of smoking and alcohol would reduce his chance of recurrence of stroke. See that he moves his limbs for some time daily (even if bed ridden) , physical inactivity helps in blood circulation.

Continue Physiotherapy for his weakness, speech therapy if he has any difficulty speaking.

Follow up with HbA1c, serum triglycerides, cholesterol levels every 1 month.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing your father in law a very good health!
