How Can A Stitch Wound On The Thigh Be Treated?

My 10 year old son got stitches on his thigh 8 days ago on his thigh wear the brake lever of his bike went in. It looks good no redness no pus but it has been very hard underneath the stitches. I figured it was a small hematoma that would eventually go away. I m an RN so I went to take the stitches out today. As soon as I took the first stitch out it immediately started bleeding not old blood but bright blood. It doesn t look like it s completely closed but I m wondering if the hematoma is putting to much pressure underneath to heal. I left the rest of the stitches in. Is it possible the hematoma may need to be evacuated.

A hematoma should not feel hard. I think the firmness is caused by fibrin and blood, which at the time of injury was liquid, and subsequently, have become matted together.

I wish I could ask you how long the bleeding continued after you removed the stitch. Did you apply pressure over the site after removing the stitch? Was there much bright blood?

The stitches have now been in place long enough and it is time for them to be removed. Can you take your child to the ER where you work and allow the ER doctor to take them out?
