How Can A Perforated Eardrum Be Treated?

So I was in the bath and I was cleaning my ears with ear buds and I knocked it by accident and the cotton bod went about a centimetre and a half, now I cannot hear properly out of that ear. I’m also getting sharp ear pains that I can’t skeeo with and when I tried cleaning it again I noticed blood on the cotton bud. I thought it may have been a perforated eardrum, what should I do?

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Many a times if the ear bud goes deep inside the ear and there is sudden severe pain and loss of hearing then it is commonly due to perforation in the eardrum due to sudden traumatic injury..
Bleeding and pain is due to injury only..
So my suggestion is to consult an Emergency room or an ENT Physician and get an Otoscopic examination of the ear done..
If there is just injury to the lining of the ear canal and no perforation then you can be advised antibiotic and analgesic ear drops along with oral painkillers for relief..
If there is small perforation of the eardrum then also it commonly heals gradually, antibiotic ear drops can be given to avoid infection and analgesic ear drops to reduce pain..
But if the perforation is large then Tympanoplasty or surgical repair of eardrum has to be done..
For now you should avoid cleaning the ear again and also avoid exposure to loud sounds and excessive moisture like swimming..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
