How Can A Painful Lump On The Shoulder Be Treated?

My 16 year old son has a lump on the top of his right shoulder. He does not recall injuring it. Painful only slightly when he moves. More sore than pain. Between the size of a marble and a ping pong ball. Maybe about the size of the old super balls. Discomfort when his backpack strap rests on it which is frequent but he does use both straps simultaneously all time time.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.com

Probable diagnosis : Hematoma
Differential diagnosis: Buesitis/Lipoma
plan of management: Conservative/Surgical aspiration
Prognosis : Excellent
Anything to worry : Absolutely nothing to worry

All the symptoms you have mentioned suggest the possibility of a hematoma,it is nothing but collection of blood developing at the site of trauma.Or it could be a bursitis,It is the inflammation of fluid filled sacs around your shoulder joint.
before commencing the treatment we have to rule out some other diseases like lipoma.
I suggest you to consult an orthopedician to make an exact diagnosis. If there is any confusion you may need a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment may be conservative or by surgical aspiration in which blood or fluid inside the swelling aspirated by a needle inserted in to the swelling.
Hope this information helps.
Wishing you good health.

Regards.
