How Can A Liver Disease Be Treated?

My sister was recently diagnosed with liver disease, etiology unknown. Her doctor says all he can do is give her a series of injections over a six months time and then wait. Other than watching her diet and exercise is there something more she can do? And I realize a prognosis would be very difficult to determine on line but what might we as family look for to help her with the possibilities?

Thanks for contacting with your health concern.
1. As diagnosed with liver disease of unknown etiology get a second opinion or consult a Hepatologist as how to proceed further since mild elevation of liver enzymes are normal [although liver produces enzymes in response to injury/infection]

2. For prophylaxis: check the values repeatedly since if increasing there could be an ongoing hepatocellular injury like superadded infection can cause liver dysfunction since mine concern would be viral hepatitis A-B [probable reason of long-term injection therapy]

PS. keep a note that although these tests are sensitive but very nonspecific and serve to detect liver disease rather than quantitative liver function so their high values don't signify a serious complication most of the time, it is the underlying pathophysiological process which needs to be diagnosed and managed.

3. preventive measures which you can adopt

- maintain personal hygiene and cleanliness.
- boiled water or bottled water.
- strictly no alcohol, painkillers [except paracetamol]
- immunization against Hepatitis A & B
