Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can A Basal Cell Carcinoma On The Lower Eyelid Be Treated?
I have a malignant basal cell carcinoma on my lower eyelid. I m told that it must be removed by a surgeon using the Mohs procedure. I m looking for information of any kind at this point. What will my eyelid look like after surgery? Will my eye and surrounding facial features be disfigured? Am I under anesthesia during the procedure? Is it done as an outpatient? How long does it take to heel?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Well, there is no doubt that surgery should be performed since basal cell carcinoma (BCC) will grow for sure and may cause significant difficulties for your eyes.
Mohs is the most optimal procedure since it will be most sparing and most acceptable when esthetics is considered. The overall cosmetic results depend on the size of skin which must be removed and it is hard to predict it accurately, but in most cases there is no significant effect on cosmetic look so it will not be disfigured. This can be done under local anesthesia and as outpatients unless this is very large and affects eye muscles. It takes around 2 weeks to heal but recovery may last for 3 to 4 weeks.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
